Multi Table Turbo Sit n Goes

Some players prefer a larger format tournament than the standard one table sit n go.  However, these multi table sit n goes take much longer than a single table sit n go.  The introduction of "turbo" sit n goes has fixed this problem for players with limited time.  The larger prize pool and quicker play can mean more money for you if you master the correct strategy.

Size

Multi table turbo sit n goes are offered in many sizes at most sites.  The most common size is the 2 table sit n go, which has 18-20 players.  Another common size is the 5 table sit n go, which has 45-50 players depending on the site.  Two other less common sizes are the 3 table and 4 table sit n goes.  Even though the amount of players differs in these tournaments, the strategy is basically the same, as only a certain percentage make it into the money.

Payouts

The payout percentages and amounts differ at various sites.  However, some good estimates are as follows:

Size Payouts
2 Table Top 4 Places
3 Table Top 5 Places
5 Table Top 7-8 Places

Early Strategy

At the start of the tournament you should be playing very tight.  The first two levels have very low blinds, so you can afford to fold everything but premium hands.  You want to conserve your chips and avoid bluffing situations.  However, opposed to normal sit n goes, if you get an opportunity to go all in early in the sit n go preflop when you feel you are ahead you should take advantage of it.  The reason for this is because the turbo format is going to limit the amount of hands you will see before you get blinded away.  In a non-turbo tournament you will be able to wait for later rounds before you are forced to go all in, but that is not the case with turbos.  An example for this is as follows:

You hold AJ in the big blind.  The player in dealer position has been playing very aggressively.  It is folded around to the dealer, who goes all in.  The blinds are very low compared to his bet, so you aren't getting good pot odds to call this.  However, since the dealer has been playing crazy, and you have a decent hand, you should call this bet to try and double up early.  In a normal sit n go you wouldn't make this play, but you need to gain chips fairly quickly in the turbo format so you should make the call.

As you continue to play the levels will raise fairly quickly, usually 5-10 minutes per level.  You need to continue to make smart gambles to try and build a stack for the final table.  If there are any all in situations where you are confident you are ahead you should make the call, as you are going to have to build a stack eventually if you want a chance to win.

Later Strategy

As you build your stack, the players remaining will dwindle because of increased blind pressure.  When you reach the bubble of the final table, you will be in a tough situation.  Since the two tables are being played shorthanded, blind pressure is going to be very intense.  If you have already built a huge stack, you can play semi-conservative to guarantee yourself a good stack to start the final table.  However, if you have an average stack blinds are going to kill you.  You need to make smart blind steals to maintain your stack until a player gets out and you reach the final table.  An example of a smart steal is as follows:

You have QJ in the big blind.  You have 3500 chips and the small blind has 4000 chips.  Blinds are 300/600.  It is folded around to the small blind, who calls.  The small blind is a fairly conservative player, and you haven't seen him raise pots very often.  Since the small blind just limped in, you can figure that he has a weak or mediocre hand.  If you raise it to 1800 here, he will be forced to call 1200 more to play.  He is going to have to play this hand out of position and risk a huge amount of his chips to play, so he will almost always fold.  By padding your stack with smart steals, you should be in good shape for the final table.

Final Table Strategy

When you reach the final table, blind pressure will lessen as the table will be filled so blinds will come around less often.  Blinds are still high though, so most hands will be a preflop all in.  To gain chips in this situation you have to continue to make smart steals like before, but incorporate some more advanced techniques to win pots.  One good strategy to knock an opponent out is as follows:

One player has been playing very aggressively and raising almost every pot that no one has entered.  You are dealt QQ in the dealer position.  The aggressive player is in the big blind.  Instead of making a raise here and showing your strength you should just limp in.  The reason for this is because the big blind is going to try and steal this pot by going all in.  When he does you can make an easy call and knock him out.  This will gain you many more chips opposed to raising the blinds and having everyone fold.

If you have a large stack you may want to play conservatively until you are deeper in the money to guarantee yourself a higher finish.  Once it is shorthanded with 3-5 people remaining you need to play extremely aggressive to gain a chip advantage for heads up.  Once you reach heads up you can view an article we have to help you: Heads Up Strategy
