Howard Lederer

Full Tilt Poker TableHoward “The Professor” Lederer was born in Concord, New Hampshire to a competitive gambling family.  His sister, Annie Duke, is also a successful and well known poker player.  He is noted in the poker industry for his mild manner, even temper, internet poker play, and friendly demeanor.

Howard originally played competitive chess until he discovered a poker game in the back of his favorite chess hall.  Ever since his first day playing poker, he was hooked.  He started out a big time losing player but he soon took a step back, analyzed his game and began the process of improving.

He started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York and there met a group of other young, excited poker players.  A couple of future poker greats in his group included Erik Seidel and Dan Harrington.  Howard improved his skills so much that by 1993, it became necessary to move to Las Vegas to find more poker action.

"The Professor" in Las Vegas

In Las Vegas he worked on his cash game, won a few tournaments and kept his head in the game.  He won his first WSOP bracelet in the $5,000 buy-in Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event in 2000.  The very next year he won another bracelet in the $5,000 buy-in Deuce to Seven event in 2001.

Keeping himself busy, he went on to win the WPT Championship at Foxwoods in 2002.  In 2003 he won another WPT Championship in the $5,000 limit Hold'em event.  Right after that he went on to win the 2003 $5,000 buy-in no limit Hold'em at the Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic.

In 2004 he won another Bellagio championship in the $2,500 no limit Hold'em event.  Two weeks later he won the Bellagio $5,000 pot limit Omaha event.  Four years later he won the 2008 Crown Aussie Millions Championship for just under a million dollars.

WSOP Success

In addition to his wins, Howard has appeared at a total of 13 WSOP final tables.  To date his tournament wins total to almost $4 million.  Despite this success, Howard remains a gentleman both at the tables and away from the tables.

Howard’s nickname as The Professor originates from his long list of tournament wins, excellent understanding of poker theory and his scholarly demeanor at the tables.  He coached his sister to poker greatness and she even went on to knock Howard out of three events over the years.

With nine major tournament wins to his name, Howard Lederer is a dangerous poker player.  His readiness to learn and willingness to teach others make him a constantly evolving and improving poker player.  Expect to hear more from Lederer in the years to come.
