The History of Poker
Both offline and online poker have gained the sympathy of people from all over the planet and many poker lovers still wonder what the true origin of this adventure-studded game is. Nevertheless, tracking poker's birthplace is virtually impossible since this game has been played for many centuries. Poker's captivating charm continues to conquer the minds and hearts of millions every day. And, with the introduction of the Internet, online poker has become the favorite pastime for many poker enthusiasts out there.
Although other types of poker games, such as 5-Card Draw and Pai Gow poker, receive recognition in the modern card rooms as well, the above mentioned games are the most popular ones. While in traditional poker rooms players put their money on the line as part of the gaming entertainment, Internet-based poker rooms allow players to play poker for free. This is particularly good for beginning players seeking to hone their gaming skills.
In the early in 1970's, an ardent poker aficionado Benny Binion, a Las Vegas casino owner, launched a competition nowadays known as the World Series of Poker. The competition's format as we know it today is not exactly the same as the original one, with games having been constantly added and removed throughout the years.
There is no doubt that Binion accomplished his goal. He sought to make the WSOP an internationally celebrated event and he certainly made his poker competition a highly prestigious championship. Interestingly enough, following the incredible rise in poker's popularity, some countries in the world, such as Russia, no longer consider poker a gambling game but a sport completely detached from the old mafia stories we are all familiar with.
However, despite poker's explosive popularity, there are still some people who speak against the game. Poker's opponents typically mention the game's negative social impacts, such as gambling addiction and its availability to minors over the Internet. Poker's supporters, however, claim that today's gaming establishments, online and land-based alike, disallow entrance to minors and openly encourage responsible gaming on the part of their patrons. Internet players' complete safety and security during their visits to the online card rooms is another issue receiving wide attention these days...
