Playing to Win in Sit and Go's
Playing for first place is your best option when playing sit and goes. If you want to become a winning sit and go player, you will have to shoot for first place every time. Trying to hold on to make third, just won’t cut it if that’s your general outlook on the situation. Obviously sometimes you’ll have a huge chip lead over the competition and you have nothing other than first in mind, but I’m talking about being on the lower to middle end.
You must remember that the house usually takes a pretty big chunk as rake, often times up to 10%, which is ridiculous, but we’re left no choice. If you try making third, your profit won’t be very much and when you put that with all the times that you bubble, your bankroll is down. A first place finish usually pays 2-3 times that of third place.

If you want to play for first place you’re going to have to play aggressively, but still smart. You still want to play tight in the early rounds, but you still want to take chances as well. Since the blinds are very small you can take more chances and if you happen to lose a chunk of your stack then it’s not a big problem since the blinds won’t eat you away. When I say risks, I mean beneficial risks, such as an open ender, flush draw with over cards, and so on.
So, your goal is to get high in chips. Once you do so, you can boss the table around and force people out when you normally couldn’t. It will be better to go out early than to bubble by trying to hold on until third place. If you win third three times, then that would be about equal to one first place win. It will be easier to win the one first place. Just keep in mind that sometimes hands will go your way and sometimes they won’t. You may have wait until the middle round before you even get a hand to start building your stack.
