Bluffing in Pot Limit Omaha High
Bluffing is an important aspect of poker strategy in any variation of the game. In Pot Limit Omaha the 4 hole cards and betting structure mean that many players bluff inappropriately for the game – costing valuable chips. This article looks at how and when to successfully bluff in pot limit Omaha poker.
We will start by looking at the 2 main constraints – bet sizes and 4 hole cards – and how these affect bluffing success rates. Next the vital difference between ‘pure bluffs’ and ‘semi-bluffs’ in Omaha poker are covered. Finally we look at other important factors such as number of opponents, their tendencies and the texture of the flop.
Drawing Hands
With each player holding 4 hole cards the number of ways each opponent has of hitting the flop (or a strong draw) increases exponentially. This means that bets are more likely to be called on the flop, bluffing would thus be less effective than in other poker games. This is particularly the case in the lower limits against inexperienced opponents who may call with non-nut draws.
The pot-limit betting structure also affects your bluffing success rate. Since you can only bet up to the size of the current pot your flop bets will be small relative to the stack sizes. Opponents may call more often with draws based on the number of chips that could be won if they make a strong hand.
Both of these factors mean that ‘pure bluffs’ are less likely to be successful in pot limit Omaha. However, since Omaha is a game of big draws semi-bluffs are actually more likely to show a profit. Semi-Bluffing involves making a big bet with a strong draw.

Semi Bluffing
You have 2 ways to win the hand, either your opponents fold immediately or they call but you go on to make the best hand anyway. An example would be an ace-high flush draw, you may re-raise an opponent representing a made hand, but have 9 outs on each remaining street to make your hand if you are called.
It is common to see a match up between a made hand such as trips and a strong draw such as a wrap straight draw or 2 pair / flush draw combination in Omaha. Many times the draw will actually be the favorite to win the hand – the person may think they are semi-bluffing but are actually getting their chips in with the best of it.
When considering a bluff in pot limit Omaha the number of opponents is very important. Ideally you will bluff from position against a single opponent. With strong draws you may consider bluffing into 2 – any more than this you really need enough nut outs to ensure you are protected when called.
There are occasions when a pure bluff can succeed. These depend on the texture of the flop or a ‘scare card’ appearing on a later street. A single suit flop can be good for a bluff, though you will need to give up quickly when called if you do not have a flush. Paired boards can also be bluffing opportunities, especially when you have bet the flop and the turn or river pairs the board – opponents with straight or flush draws are likely to fold.
Opponents Playing Style
Finally you need to take into account your opponent’s playing style when bluffing in Pot Limit Omaha. Some players will call the smaller flop bet but fold to a bigger raise on a later street, others will call you all the way with medium-strength holdings, while many will simply fold if they miss the flop. Taking careful notes on these tendencies will increase the profit on both your bluffs and your value bets.
In summary, bluffing in Pot Limit Omaha can be difficult due to the number of ways each opponent can hit the flop and the relatively small size of flop bets. Semi-bluffing is a standard play and will give you 2 ways to win the pot. Dangerous flops and / or timid opponents represent excellent bluffing opportunities – however you need to observe your opponents to ensure that you are not bluffing a calling station!
